Charles CAMOIN (1879-1965)

 

 

Born in Marseille in 1879 and died in 1965. He painted nudes, landscapes, still-life and marine paintings. He was a post-impressionism and fauvist painter. He studied at the Beaux_arts of Paris and at the Gustave Moreau’s studio in 1897. During the same year, he met Matisse, Marquet and Jean Puy. In 1900, he did his military service in Arles and immersed himself in the art of Van Gogh. Then, he settled in Aix-en-Provence in 1902, where he met Cézanne, for whom he had a great admiration. His life is marked by travels and meetings. Camoin exposed for the first time at Salon des Artistes Indépendants in Paris, in 1903. In 1905, during the Salon d’Automne, he was a part of the Fauvism group. His first art works refered to Provence school: paint width, vivid colours. His latest works represented bunch of flowers, and seascapes.
