BIOGRAPHY

Diego GIACOMETTI (1902-1985)

Diego Giacometti was born in Stampa, Switzerland in 1902. After his studies he joined his brother in Paris in 1927. During the 1930s and 1940s it was very difficult to separate Diego’s work from that of Alberto, as they both occupied the same studio (as they did until the end of their lives). Alongside Alberto’s sculptures, for which Diego assisted his brother and often supervised the casting process, the two brothers jointly created luminaires and objets d’art in bronze and plaster for the decorator Jean-Michel Frank. From the 1950s onwards, Diego produced furniture and sculptures in bronze on his own, often decorated with animals (frogs, dogs, cats). Among his important clients were the Maeght family in Saint-Paul de Vence and the Noailles family. At the end of his life he designed the furniture and lighting for the Picasso Museum in Paris. He passed away in 1985.
