Amédée OZENFANT (1886-1966)

Amédée Ozenfant (1886–1966) was a French painter and art theorist, best known as a co-founder of the «  urism” movement. Born in Saint-Quentin, France, he initially studied art and architecture before dedicating himself to painting.

In 1918, alongside Le Corbusier (then Charles-Édouard Jeanneret), Ozenfant published the manifesto “After Cubism”, which critiqued the decorative excesses of Cubism and advocated for a return to simplicity, clarity, and order in art. Purism, influenced by Cubism and industrial aesthetics, emphasized geometric forms and clean compositions to reflect modernity.

Ozenfant also co-founded the influential journal “L’Esprit Nouveau” with Le Corbusier, promoting modernist ideas. Later, he established the “Académie Ozenfant” in Paris and New York, where he taught and influenced many artists. Though less renowned than some of his peers, Ozenfant’s contributions to modern art and theory remain significant.
