Battle of Castillon (July 17, 1453)
.
The ‘Battle of Castillon’, the final major conflict of the ‘Hundred Years’ War, pitted the French forces of King Charles VII, led by Jean Bureau, against the English army under John Talbot. Near Castillon-la-Bataille (in present-day Gironde), the French made decisive use of entrenched artillery, a groundbreaking innovation in warfare.

The English assault, poorly prepared, ended in a crushing defeat: Talbot was killed, and English control over Aquitaine collapsed. This victory marked the effective end of the Hundred Years’ War and the definitive return of southwestern France to the French crown.
