The Winged Hen (Poule à ailettes) by César Baldaccini is part of the artist’s exploration of welded metal in the late 1950s. The motif of the hen, recurring throughout his work, holds a significant place within his corpus, allowing him to investigate a readily recognizable figurative subject while developing a distinctly modern visual language. Cast in bronze with a brown patina, the sculpture is constructed from assembled metal elements forming a silhouette that is both robust and dynamic. This tension between figuration and abstraction reflects the legacy of Pablo Picasso and Julio González, while also anticipating his involvement with the Nouveaux Réalistes alongside Arman and Jean Tinguely.  Through this familiar subject, César transforms industrial material into an expressive form that is emblematic of his work.
