The Emperor and his staff, at the head of his troops, leave Moscow. The rigor of an early winter will be disastrous for the French troops who will suffer many losses, both in men and equipment. This unfortunate episode was poorly represented in painting and makes this work a striking testimony of the Napoleonic epopee.
