Born September 15, 1827 in Marseille, died in 1910 in Paris. Genre paintings, typical subjects, animated compositions, portraits, scenes of hunting, landscapes, animals. His name is a pseudonym, the mother of the painter, Marie Besse, only having recognized him in 1868. Student of Picot, he is considered as a painter of history and battle. He started at the French Salon of 1857 and obtained a third class medal in 1893. He married the daughter of the painter Félix Philippoteaux and made many trips to Algeria. He was in Morocco in 1879, and his orientalist production assured him his fame. At the end of his life, he occupies in Montmartre a modest apartment in the city called “The castle of fog”. He painted mainly horses, fantasias, camps of Arabs, works treated with a certain chromatic brilliance. His paintings are mainly views of Algeria, Morocco and animated scenes of prancing horses.
