Jean-Désiré BASCOULES (1886-1976)
Born August 19, 1886 in Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales). Died in 1976 in Montpellier (Hérault). Twentieth century. French. After studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, he was a pupil of Cormon in Paris, before staying at Villa Abd-el-Tif in Algiers. From 1914, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, obtaining a bronze medal in 1921, a silver medal in 1922, the Prix Romain-Thirion in 1924, a gold medal in 1925. He was then ranked out – Contest decorated the legion of honor in 1932. In 1933, he exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries and figured at the international exhibition of 1937. He stayed in the countries of North Africa and brought back many paintings. In his compositions, diffuse light crushes the forms and highlights a darker tone in the middle of large desert plans. Bascoulès’s painting is not embarrassed by the Orientalist pitoresque scenery, it shows a synthetic vision of a world where alternating animated surfaces and peaceful spaces. He is also the author of frescoes, notably at the Algerian Assemblies’ Palace, and tapestry cartoons for the Goblins.
