Charles CHAPLIN (1825-1891)

Son of an Englishman, married to a Frenchwoman, he painted the young women with grace, like Francois Boucher. He did not become naturalized French until 1886. Pupil of DROLLING, he began as a painter of portraits and landscapes. His early works were strong and realistic. But he soon changed his form for the grace that made his reputation. His design has strength and flexibility, his colors were bright and delicate. He rewarded many medals: Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1879, officer in 1881. He was, moreover, the favorite painter of the Empress Eugenie.
