Jean LE MAYEUR DE MERPRES (1844-1923)
Born in 1844 in Boitsfort (Brussels), died in Brussels in 1923. Belgian school XIX-XX century. Painter of landscapes and marine. Post-Impressionist. With Isidore Meyers and Jacques Rosseels, he was part of the landscaping group of Dendermonde. He began in Brussels in 1870, and since then has regularly exhibited at the Salons de la Ville. He also participated in the French Salon in Paris, obtained two bronze medals at the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. In 1891, he won a gold medal in Munich. He was knighted by the Order of Leopold and the Order of St. Michael of Bavaria. He interpreted with great feeling the greatness of the ocean (dixit Bénézit). His son, Adrien Jean (1880-1958), was a famous orientalist and post-impressionist painter.
