GENEVIÈVE CLAISSE (1935-2018)

Geneviève Claisse was a French abstract painter born on November 25, 1935, in Quiévy, France. She died on April 30, 2018, in Dreux, France. Claisse was a prominent figure in the field of geometric abstract art and was part of the Op Art movement. She began her artistic career in the 1950s, after studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and with Auguste Herbin, a leading figure in the geometric abstraction movement. Claisse’s work features vibrant colors and intricate geometric shapes arranged in a highly structured and precise manner. She was particularly interested in exploring the interplay between light and color, and her paintings often give the impression of movement and depth. Claisse exhibited her work extensively throughout her lifetime, both in France and internationally, and her paintings are part of numerous private and public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
