Pablo PICASSO (1881-1973)
Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 in Malaga, and died in 1973 in Mougins in Alpes Maritimes. He was the most brilliant artist from the 20th Century. From the earliest age, Pablo Picasso was introduced to art through his father, who was a painter and a teacher at the Fine Arts of Barcelona, the Llotja. All the artistic life of Picasso was made of a lot of periods, like the blue period, the pink period, or the surrealism period. Until he found his own : the cubism. This one was born from a great friendship and a great collaboration with Georges Braque. “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” (1906-1907 ; Museum of Modern Art, New York) is the cubist reference he executed in Bateau-Lavoir (artist city), in Butte Montmartre, Paris. The art of Pablo Picasso has constantly evolved over the decades and remains a reference for both artists and the art market.

This work is part of a series of drawings created in late summer 1956, amid rising tensions in Algeria, while Morocco and Tunisia had just gained independence and France faced violent conflicts. The drawing, an allegory of peace, depicts two faces in blue, white, and red-symbolizing France and Algeria—crowned by a dove holding an olive branch. It conveys a hope for reconciliation and a return to peace. According to Paco Rebés, these drawings were likely preparatory studies for publication in newspapers, though no poster or printed edition appears to have been produced.
