This work, ‘Petite Forêt 7’ (2011) by Eva Jospin, takes the form of a sculptural relief enclosed within a glass-fronted box, reminiscent of a diorama or a cabinet of curiosities. It is made from carefully cut, assembled, and patinated cardboard, transformed into a dense, miniature forest. The branches and trunks intertwine in a complex, almost chaotic network, creating a striking sense of depth despite the small scale. The humble material is meticulously worked to imitate the texture and appearance of wood, giving the piece an organic and lifelike quality. This “little forest” evokes a mysterious, enclosed space where the eye can wander through layers of intricate detail and shadow. It reflects the artist’s fascination with forest landscapes as places of imagination—somewhere between untamed nature and mental construction—while also challenging our perception of space and material.
